Skiing 28″ of Pow in Crested Butte

About a month ago Matt and I planned a trip to Crested Butte to go skiing and visit some friends. What we didn’t know at the time was what the snow conditions would be like. We must have done something right for good karma because we got two amazing days of powder skiing.

We left Summit County on Saturday at 1pm, just before winter storm Kayla came knocking at the door. On the drive down the sky was a dark grey and very ominous looking. The roads were clear though and we made it to CB just as it started snowing.

The owner’s of the company that we work for in Keystone have a condo in The Lodge at Mountaineer Square in Mt. Crested Butte right next to the lifts. I watched their dog Zeke this summer for a few days and they said we could book their condo for a few nights in CB as a trade.

We checked into our condo around 5pm and unloaded our gear and got it ready to get up and go in the morning. Then we headed into town to get some food just as the snow started to fall heavily. The town shuttle is pretty much the best thing ever. We didn’t touch the car the entire three days.

It was Saturday night before a pow day and everywhere was packed so we ended up at Pitas in Paradise, which actually was super delicious and affordable. We both got rice bowls and beers and watched the x-games.

We got to bed early that night in anticipation for Sunday’s festivities. We woke up in the morning to 11″ of snow reported at 5am but by 8am we were up to 13″. We met our friend Adam and jumped in line to wait for the lifts to start turning.

Day 1 – First Run

That first run was absolutely amazing. We had fresh tracks and although busy for Crested Butte, nowhere near as busy as any of our home mountains would be on a powder day. Adam’s wife Kristi met up with us on our first run and they showed us around all day to make sure we didn’t end up at any mandatory cliff drops. It took the resort awhile to open the surface lifts so we did some tree runs off of Paradise and East River and then hit the headwall and north face lift in the early afternoon.

After skiing all day we went back to the condo for beers, pizza and a hot tub session before crashing into our beds exhausted.

The snow continued to fall and when we woke up at 7am on Monday they had reported another 12″ and it continued snowing all day. Kristi met up with us in the morning and it was DEEP. We skied a ton of amazing terrain off of high lift and north face again and found ourselves giddy with excitement at every turn no matter how exhausted our legs felt. We voted out favorite run Hawk’s Nest to Last Steep off of the North Face lift.

We finally called it around 3pm and went back to the condo to shower and get ready to go out to sushi with Kristi. We went to Lil’s Sushi Bar and Grill which we have heard so many good things about, and it did not disappoint. After dinner we had ice cream at the Third Bowl and then went home to pass out in a food coma. Then in the morning we packed up and headed home after stopping for breakfast at Paradise Cafe.

It was such an amazing trip. We could not have planned it any better and totally lucked out with the snow. Crested Butte has such amazing terrain and we had so much fun with our friends Adam and Kristi. I already can’t wait to go back!!
